Stump Grinding & Removal in Buffalo, NY

Ground out well below grade, backfilled and raked level — so you can reseed, replant or pave straight over the spot.

A leftover stump is a tripping hazard, a mower-blade killer and an open invitation to carpenter ants, termites and honey fungus — all of which are happy to move on to healthy trees and structures nearby once they have finished with it.

Grinding is faster, cheaper and far less destructive than excavating a stump out whole. A cutting wheel reduces the stump and its major surface roots to chips, typically eight to twelve inches below grade — deeper if you are planning to replant or pour on the spot. The hole is backfilled with the grindings and raked level, ready for topsoil and seed.

Our Stump Grinding Work Covers

Below-Grade Grinding

Standard depth is 8–12 inches under the surrounding soil line — enough to plant grass or lay sod straight over the top.

Extra Depth for Replanting

Planning a new tree, a patio or a fence post in the same spot? We can go deeper and widen out to clear the root plate.

Surface Root Chasing

The big radiating roots that ridge up your lawn get ground out too, not just the visible stump.

Tight-Access Machines

Narrow-track grinders fit through a standard gate, so a back-yard stump does not mean taking down your fence.

Utility Locating

Underground utilities are marked before the wheel touches the ground — non-negotiable on every job.

Backfill & Cleanup

Grindings returned to the hole and raked level, surplus chips hauled away or left for mulch if you want them.

Reasons to grind rather than leave it

A stump rarely stays a purely cosmetic problem for long.

Book an Assessment
  • It is a tripping hazard in a lawn, especially once grass grows over it
  • Carpenter ants, termites or beetles are nesting in the decaying wood
  • Honey fungus or other root-rot fungi are fruiting on or around it
  • Suckers keep sprouting from the stump or its roots
  • You want to replant, lay sod, extend a patio or run a fence through the spot
  • Mowing around it is chewing up your blades

Stump Grinding: Your Questions Answered

Our standard is 8 to 12 inches below the surrounding grade, comfortably enough to put down topsoil and grass. If you intend to plant a new tree, pour concrete or set a post in the same location, tell us at the quote and we will grind deeper and wider to clear the root plate properly.

Grinding produces a surprising volume — noticeably more than the stump looked like it would hold. We backfill the hole with them and rake it level as standard. Surplus chips can be hauled away, or piled somewhere on the property if you want them for mulch on beds and paths. Note that they settle over the following months, so plan to top the spot up with soil.

Yes, provided we grind deep and wide enough and the grindings are removed rather than backfilled. Wood chips tie up nitrogen as they break down and will starve a young tree, so the hole should be filled with clean topsoil instead. Mention your replanting plans up front and we will grind accordingly.

Absolutely — plenty of our grinding work is on old stumps left behind by someone else, sometimes years earlier. All we need is enough access to get the machine to it. Send a photo with your enquiry and we can usually give you a good idea of the price before we visit.
