Tree Health Assessment in Buffalo, NY

An ISA Certified Arborist looks at what is actually wrong with your tree — and tells you plainly whether it can be saved.

Trees decline slowly, then fail suddenly. By the time a canopy is visibly thinning, the cause has usually been at work for several seasons — and the window in which a cheap intervention would have worked has often already closed.

An assessment is a systematic inspection by an ISA Certified Arborist: species and site conditions, root flare and soil, trunk and union defects, canopy condition, and any signs of pathogens or insects. You get a straight answer on what is wrong, how serious it is, and what your realistic options are — including when the honest recommendation is to do nothing yet.

Our Tree Health Assessment Work Covers

Disease Diagnosis

Identification of the fungal, bacterial and canker problems common in Western New York, and what each one means for the tree.

Pest Identification

Emerald ash borer, gypsy moth, scale, borers and other insects — confirmed by evidence on the tree, not guesswork.

Structural Risk Assessment

Cavities, decay, included bark, cracks, root loss and lean evaluated against what the tree could actually hit if it failed.

Soil & Root Evaluation

Compaction, grade changes, girdling roots and drainage problems — the invisible causes behind a great many declining trees.

Written Findings

A clear report with photographs, suitable for your own records, a contractor, an insurer or a municipal permit application.

Prioritised Plan

What needs doing now, what can wait a season, and what only needs watching — with costs attached so you can plan.

Worth having a tree looked at when

Early symptoms are subtle. These are the ones most often noticed too late.

Book an Assessment
  • Leaves emerging late, dropping early, undersized or discoloured
  • Thinning canopy or dieback starting at the branch tips
  • Mushrooms, conks or shelf fungus at the base or on the trunk
  • Sap bleeding, oozing wounds or areas of loose, cracking bark
  • D-shaped exit holes, sawdust-like frass, or heavy woodpecker activity
  • Recent construction, trenching or grade change within the root zone

Tree Health Assessment: Your Questions Answered

Sometimes. Problems caused by the site — compaction, poor drainage, girdling roots, a grade change over the root zone, drought stress — are often reversible if caught early enough. Advanced internal decay, a failing root plate or a systemic vascular disease generally are not. The point of the assessment is to tell you which category your tree is in before you spend money on treatment that cannot work.

A straightforward look at a single tree during a quote visit is normally free. A detailed diagnostic inspection with a written report — the kind you would want for an insurance claim, a permit application, a property sale or a dispute with a neighbour — is a paid consultation, and we quote it up front based on the number of trees and the depth of report you need.

It depends on how far along it is. Ash that still hold most of their canopy can sometimes be protected with ongoing systemic treatment, which has to continue for the life of the tree. Once significant dieback and bark splitting have set in, treatment no longer pays and removal becomes the safer call — dead ash go brittle fast and become genuinely dangerous to climb. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your tree sits on.

Yes. We produce written arborist reports with photographs and findings for insurance claims, municipal removal permits, property transactions and boundary disputes. Tell us what the report is for when you book, since the required level of detail varies quite a bit.
